Microscale characterization of damage accumulation in CMCs

Abstract The developing roles of damage mechanisms in the failure response SiC/SiC minicomposites was investigated by characterization microscale accumulation with respect to microstructure. A multi-modal approach combining spatially resolved acoustic emission (AE) tensile testing in-SEM (scanning electron microscope) used simultaneously examine surface (observed in-SEM) and bulk (monitored via AE). Strong agreement shown between evolving crack density estimated AE measurements. following were observed: (i) in-plane matrix content distribution impacted growth; (ii) spatially-distributed cracks generated varying stress-dependent AE; (iii) certain individual became more probable locations due unique combinations that drove their growth. This enabled characterizing potential determinants suggests early behavior is related microstructural features (e.g. flaws), while subsequent coupled interactions local stress.
